Welcome to ‘Roots and Shoots’ at Holt Hall
Holt Hall Field Studies Centre offers a wide range of diverse environmental and outdoor learning experiences. ‘Roots and Shoots’ is helping to bring life to Holt Hall’s Victorian walled garden. The project aims to be a source of inspiration to all visiting schools, producing high quality examples of how to grow fruit and vegetables organically, in ways that schools can replicate in their own environments.
The project at Holt Hall has already engaged students from different educational backgrounds and community groups, helping to facilitate the development of horticultural, teamwork and interpersonal skills. To find out more on how the work of the team successfully motivated two students that attended the Roots and Shoots project, please take a few moments to read their individual case studies: Case Study 1. Case Study 2, Case Study 3, Case Study 4
An outreach project from the Growing For Success team at Holt Hall recently completed a ten week after school club event at ECO Tech Centre in Swaffham. A group of children from the local Junior School gained new skills in the 'outdoor classroom'.
The project was designed not only to raise their gardening skills but also for the children to become more confident , with the aim to achieve better concentration and focus in and out of school. Please click here to read how the school perceived the project.
Students with 'behavioural, emotional and social difficulties' (BESD) or Special Education Needs (SEN), experience and present particular challenges in school. The Roots and Shoots team and facilities at Holt Hall offers particular opportunities to these young people. More information can be accessed by down loading two publications from the Growing Schools at the DCSF.
The project can meet your individual needs through work related learning opportunities, diplomas and certificated courses. Volunteers and community groups are also valued partners.
Chris Wright, Project Manager, is available to provide advice and consultancy to schools wishing to develop their own growing initiatives.

Vision Plan for Victorian Walled Garden, Holt Hall.
The project will produce organic fruit and vegetables to be used in Holt Hall’s kitchen, allowing visiting students to enjoy the taste of home grown food. The project will also provide opportunities for young people to visit farms and investigate issues concerning food production.
