PE Sport and Physical Development

Power of Five

Every Child Matters...not just a document but a philosophy.

We believe that all children and young people have the right to be healthy, happy and safe; to be loved, valued and respected; and to have high aspirations for their future.

This vision drives the work of Physical Education, School Sport and Physical Development here in Norfolk.  Every child matters and every child has the right to enjoy and participate in high quality physical education and school sport, regardless of their age, ability, gender and background.

Norfolk is committed to ensuring that every child spends 2 hours a week on high quality physical education and school sport, within and beyond the curriculum.  Our School Sport Partnerships are a vital tool in this task and initial data from this years PESSCL Data Collection indicates that 91% of our young people aged 5-16 years spend 2 hours a week on high quality PE and sport.  This is great news, but there is always room for improvement.

Physical Education is further distinguished by characteristics which require it to be valued in its own right:

  • It is the only subject where the focus is on the body, its movement and physical development.
  • Through improving physical competence, it positively enhances self-confidence, self esteem, engagement and behaviour, and educational attainment through more positive attitudes to learning.
  • It provides the skills, understanding and confidence for engagement in activity which is the basis for healthy, enjoyable, active lifestyles.
  • It contributes to integrated development of mind and body, and enhances social and cognitive development.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION - defined

The aim of Physical Education is systematically to develop physical competence so that children are able to move efficiently, effectively and safely and understand what they are doing.  The outcome - physical literacy - is as important to children's education and development as numeracy and literacy.

This statement was agreed at the National Summit on Physical Education in January 2005. In Norfolk we passionately believe this to be the case and are working to ensure our young people get the very best experience possible during their time at school.

The County Council is fully committed to delivering High Quality and works with schools to look at and audit schools provision in light of the 10 Outcomes of High Quality PE and School Sport.

The EDP Golden Mile Challenge

EDP Golden MileNorfolk's PE, Sport and Physical Development Service is delighted to support the EDP and Premier Sport in the Golden Mile. The programme seeks to encourage young people, staff and parents to get active. Pupils in schools are actively encouraged to walk, jog, skip, skate, ride or run around a pre-determined route in order to record how far they have achieved. Certificates are available to all participants for 10 miles, 25 miles and 50 Miles!!

Simple and effective this programme offered FREE to all Norfolk Schools is a welcome support.

As the Senior County PE Adviser my team and I are supporting this free initiative and see it as a non-disruptive programme which can support all our mutual aims of helping young people stay safe and healthy, enjoy and achieve and to encouraging young people to make physical activity an important part of their daily lives. The concept also sits well with our “Power of Five” campaign to encourage young people to be active five times a week and take up the governments five hour offer for PE and sport.

Therefore we are actively encouraging all schools to register and engage in the initiative. We want to achieve 150 schools registered via the website by January 2010 and hope that you will join us. Pupils at your school can engage in the activity at breakfast club, prior to the start of the school day, at breaks and dinner-time. It is not a replacement for physical education in any way but represents a really useful tool to actively encourage participation in a safe and simple health and fitness programme.

To find out more about the Golden Mile please visit the website and register for your free information pack, resources and access to this national programme. Remember it is free for schools to engage. Visit www.edp.golden-mile.org

Go on get involved. Register today free to receive your school information pack and support material. Make a difference........make it happen!
