School of Sanctuary Award

As many Norfolk schools welcome Ukrainian, Afghan and Syrian refugees, as well as children seeking sanctuary from a number of other countries, the EAL/EDC team is delighted to be collaborating with the City of Sanctuary (opens new window) initiative and supporting the School of Sanctuary Award. The award is fully funded  and your journey towards achieving this status will be supported by the EAL/EDC Advisory team and the National School of Sanctuary organisation.

A School of Sanctuary is a school which prides itself on being a safe and inclusive place for everyone, regardless of their immigration status and will help your school to raises awareness of the issues facing people in the asylum system, challenges misconceptions about migration and build community and social cohesion. The message is a simple one: EVERYONE IS WELCOME!

Day of Welcome

Your school can also take part in the fantastic event on 14 June 2024 - 'A Day of Welcome'. By being involved you will be helping to build a culture of welcome and understanding for refugees and asylum seekers in your community. All the resources to help your school celebrate are available when you sign up!

Register via the Day of Welcome 2024 web page. You will receive a range of resources for both primary and secondary and a 'Teachers' Guide'. See resources from previous years at A Day of Welcome - Resources web page (opens new window).

The Day of Welcome is held on the Friday before Refugee Week and therefore provides a great way for children to participate in this event. It also provides an ideal first step on the journey for schools wishing to take the Schools of Sanctuary Award. For more information contact inclusionandsend@norfolk.gov.uk.
