Hosting Norwegian students

Each year, pupils from Trondheim in Norway spend one year studying in 6th forms at Norfolk schools. They are full-time students following a full Year 12 timetable and are here for the whole academic year. The expectation is that they will sit the AS Level exams at the end of the year.

Expectations of host families

Host families will be paid £150 per week directly by the student’s family to provide full board for the students, which will include:

  • A single study bedroom which will have a bed with a good supply of bedding, ample drawer and hanging space, a mirror, adequate lighting and heating and normally a writing desk or table. Hosts will provide and launder bed linen and hand and bath towels.
  • Breakfast and evening meals each day with a packed lunch on school days, and all meals at weekends
  • Adequate access to bathroom facilities and can have a daily shower or bath.

The students are here as ‘paying guests’. They are paying for the privilege of becoming an additional member of the family and should be treated as such. They will be expected to assimilate into English family life and this experience is part of their reason for coming to England

There is an expectation that the students will not be left alone in the host family home overnight, except in exceptional circumstances. If it becomes necessary to do so at any time during the stay, please let the school contact person know so alternative arrangements can be made.

The students return home for the holidays and most half terms.

Disclosure and Barring Service checks

Norfolk County Council will arrange for Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks to be carried out on everyone aged over 18 within the host families.

Back up and support for students and host families

Schools are the first line of support and you will be issued with contact details for a named person in the school. The schools will consult with Children’s Services if necessary to help resolve any problems.

The arrangements for accommodation will be reviewed either at the end of each autumn term, or earlier if necessary.
