Norfolk Steps

Norfolk Steps is located with the Learning and Inclusion Team and works closely with other services to champion inclusion.

Norfolk Steps has two core training programmes; ‘Step On’ and ‘Step Up’ and an ‘In-service’ tutor training programme. It has consultancy capability to respond to individual and urgent need. The Norfolk Steps team are experienced practitioners who come from a range of backgrounds in education and social care

  • Step On is a 6-hour course which provides foundation knowledge in understanding and responding to behaviour within educational establishments and other settings and organisations. This programme also provides guidance and practical advice to develop an understanding of the safe and effective use of everyday physical interventions. The Step On programme is designed to be delivered to all staff within a setting or organisation. This programme is refreshed bi-annually.
  • Step Up focuses on the safe and effective use of restrictive positive behaviour and is provided to core staff within services who have completed Step On training. Step Up advice and training is bespoke and is based on audited need to respond to foreseeable risk of, or actual, harmful behaviours. Step Up is refreshed annually if the audit of need remains.
  • Step On ‘Catch Up’ is a centrally delivered 6-hour Step On training course which is aimed at service users who have not been able to take part in their whole-service Step On training.
  • Steps In-service Tutor trainingFor services who wish to build capacity and have the in-house expertise to deliver the core Norfolk Steps programmes to their own staff, we offer Step On In-service Tutor training and Step Up In-service Tutor training. This extensive course equips tutors with the skills and expertise to embed the Steps approaches and philosophy within the culture of their setting or organisation. This programme is refreshed annually.

Consultation and support are available to schools and organisations. The team are able to assist with behaviour support planning, risk reduction strategies and reviewing policy around behaviour. The team are also able to deliver bespoke training to support staff roles in particular contexts in schools and services, can also be devised and delivered.

 

Additionally the team has in place a family support service level agreement with Norfolk's social work teams which allows Norfolk Steps to support parents in their own home where the behaviours of their child is particularly challenging.
