Home education

The duties of headteachers and head of services

On receiving written notification from the parents of their decision to home educate their child, the child's name must be deleted from the register of the school or service.

Under Section 9(1) of The School Attendance (Pupil Registration) (England) Regulations 2024:

  • The proprietor of a school must ensure that the name of a pupil of compulsory school age is deleted from the school's admission register when:

(f)  a parent of the pupil has told the proprietor in writing that the pupil will no longer attend the school after a certain day and will receive education otherwise than at school and -

(i)   that day has passed; and
(ii)  there is no school attendance order naming the school in force in relation to the pupil

The exception to this is if the child is on the roll of a special school. In this case, permission for parents to home educate must be given by the local authority.
