Remit of the team

We support schools and settings to deliver the requirements of RSHE and to do so in a way which promotes a safe learning environment and uses inclusive, age and stage appropriate teaching methods.

An effective Relationships, Sex and Health Education provides children and young people (CYP) with the knowledge, values, and skills to be safe, happy, and healthy in the modern world.

Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education and Health Education became compulsory for schools in September 2020. This covers Relationships Education at Key Stages 1 and 2, Relationships and Sex Education at Key Stages 3 and 4 and Health Education from Key Stage 1 to 4.

The Young People's RSE Poll 2022 tells us that only 40% of CYP rate their lessons as 'good' or 'very good'. Whilst this is a 5% increase on the year before, much work is yet to be done to ensure all CYP have access to quality curricula.

The Big Ask, the largest-ever survey of CYP in England, told us how important relationships, sex and health education (RSHE) and broader personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education is to CYP in England. When asked, CYP are very clear about how highly they value being taught life skills, about finances, and about healthy relationships, in a way that is sensitive and age appropriate. Put simply, CYP want their education to prepare them for life.

Our fully funded RSHE whole school approach programme supports our Norfolk schools and settings to deliver an effective RSHE curriculum and develop an evidence-informed approach to meeting the statutory requirements. We highlight best practice and provision which includes ensuring staff are well trained to deliver RSHE with confidence in their classrooms.

We provide a graduated offer of support to schools and settings. We support CYP in Norfolk to flourish through providing:

  • RSHE Whole School Approach Toolkit
  • RSHE bootcamps
  • RSHE INSET focusing on teaching skills and strategies
  • RSHE training focused on engaging and working with families
  • RSHE network meetings

Impact and FLOURISH

We are working hard to ensure schools and settings have everything needed to lead, plan, and teach RSHE with confidence, while getting the whole school community on board, this links to all the strands within Flourish:

F - Family and Friends

We support schools and settings to use RSHE as a tool to shape their school ethos and environment and create a space where the whole community including CYP, family and friends feels welcome, safe, and included.

L - Learning

Our CPD offer empowers teachers to effectively support learning through RSHE. We offer a comprehensive support package including online support, face to face training, networking and bespoke consultation if required.

O - Opportunity

Our universal and bespoke programme of training, guidance and support has everything you need to embed an effective provision of RSHE that makes a measurable positive impact to your CYP and whole-school improvement.

R - Resilience

We support schools and settings to provide an RSHE curriculum which supports CYP to develop resilience, to know how and when to ask for help, and to know where to access help.

I - Individual

Our CPD supports schools and settings to deliver RSHE in a way which teaches CYP to respect and celebrate differences in individuals. CYP are supported to understand the legal rights and responsibilities regarding equality (particularly with reference to the protected characteristics as defined in the Equality Act 2010) and that everyone is unique and equal.

S - Safe and Secure

RSHE equips CYP with the knowledge, skills, and values to be safe in different situations, for example when they are online, making them aware of the support available to them and how to access it. It also develops their ability to safely challenge bullying and discrimination. RSHE enables schools and settings to effectively deliver their equalities and safeguarding duties.

H - Healthy

RSHE equips CYP with the knowledge, skills, and values to maintain healthy lifestyles and address risks to their physical and mental health and to build healthy, positive relationships, including (as age and stage appropriate) intimate relationships.

Ofsted have recognised the positive impact high quality RSHE has had in Norfolk schools and settings.

This is a warm, friendly school where everyone is welcome... Pupils know about healthy relationships, healthy lifestyles, and personal safety. (Falcon Junior School, November 2022)

Pupils learn how to get on with each other and respect individual differences. They say that bullying is rare and trust staff to support them if they are worried... Personal, social and health education (PSHE) is a prominent theme that is threaded through daily school life. (The Wherry School, June 2022)
