Pupil Progress Meetings
Our Pupil Progress Document is a key resource for tracking student progress and enhancing their learning experience. It was created to be used specifically where cohorts are small and there are mixed-age classes. It's designed to support teachers in monitoring how well pupils are doing, particularly during Pupil Progress Meetings held each term after summative assessments.
During these meetings, we draw information from our school's Management Information System (MIS), which in our case is Pupil Asset. Teachers assess their pupils based on their own professional judgements, using insights from summative assessments to back up their evaluations. This approach makes sure we consider both quantitative data and qualitative insights, giving a fuller picture of pupil progress.
Using the Diagrams
The Venn diagram included in the Pupil Progress Document is particularly useful. Each pupil's name is displayed to show whether they're meeting the expected standard in each subject area. This visual guide makes it easy to see who's on track and who might need extra support. There's also a separate Venn diagram for pupils achieving greater depth, which helps us identify our high achievers.
From these diagrams and teacher judgements, we can spot pupils not making expected progress relating to their starting points. It's important to remember that not reaching expected standards doesn't always mean a pupil is underperforming; other factors may be influencing their learning.
To help track Pupil Premium and SEND pupils more effectively, we use different coloured writing for their names. This ensures they stand out during discussions, making it easier for us to focus on their needs.
Open Dialogue and Actionable Steps
The meetings aren't just about data; they're a chance for open dialogue with teachers. We discuss any interventions or strategies currently in place for specific students to see what's working and what might need tweaking. Together, we agree on actionable steps to help fill in any knowledge gaps for each pupil. This collaborative effort is key in ensuring we support all students effectively.
We also take the time to celebrate pupils who have made significant progress. By analysing what helped them succeed, we can determine if similar strategies could benefit those who are struggling. It's all about sharing best practices to ensure every pupil has a fair shot at success.
Each year group has a specific focus in the Venn diagrams, which helps to clarify expectations and avoid any confusion about what constitutes progress.
At the start of every Pupil Progress Meeting, we review the Venn diagrams. This visual overview allows us to see if pupils have moved closer to the centre, indicating improvement, or if some have slipped further away, prompting us to discuss why this might be happening. It's essential we explore any changes that could be impacting students' performance.
The Pupil Progress Document is a comprehensive tool that combines assessment data, professional judgement, and meaningful discussions to better understand pupil progress and support their learning needs. By using this document effectively, we ensure that every pupil receives the tailored support necessary for their academic journey.
