UASC
Education of Unaccompanied Asylum-Seeking Children and Young People (UASC)
Unaccompanied asylum-seeking children (UASC) are young people under 18 who arrive in the UK without a parent or legal guardian and seek asylum. They are taken in to care and supported by the Children Act 1989. You may also hear this group of children and young people referred to as separated migrant children (SMC).
Education is vital for our children and young people's integration, wellbeing, and life opportunities. They face multiple vulnerabilities and need rapid access to inclusive, trauma-informed educational support to help them settle, recover, and progress.
UASC may be working with a host of barriers to education including English as an additional language; interrupted or limited education; non-literacy; pre, during and post migration trauma experience and impact on mental health; legal and welfare issues and the asylum process.
We seek to support creating safe, inclusive educational environments with broad and appropriate curriculums that help unaccompanied asylum-seeking children and young people rebuild their lives and succeed through educational outcomes.
The Virtual School UASC Team consists of:
- UASC Adviser and UASC Strategic Lead
- UASC Adviser
- ESOL Teaching Practitioner
We will support Norfolk UASC and care leavers in any way we can in relation to their personalised education plan, employment or training. This can be through support for schools, colleges and education settings; professional development for those working with UASC; information, advice and guidance, support to young people through learning resources, language application licensing, and summer and pop up schools.
