What is Sensory Circuits?
Sensory Circuits provide a sequence of activities done repeatedly to provide the child/ young person with the right sensory input to calm and organise them for the day ahead.
How does it work?
Sensory circuits support children/young people to become more organised so they can achieve the right level of alertness and prepare them for learning.
What are the principles?
It helps children/young people achieve the right level of stimulation of their senses through a circuit of alerting, organising and calming activities. This is done repeatedly, allowing approximately five minutes for each activity.
What are the benefits?
It promotes self-awareness; helps children/young people to make stronger connections between their senses and the activities they are doing. This also promotes preparation for learning in an active, fun and enjoyable way.
How can schools/settings support?
Set up sensory circuit activities in advance (to prepare for learning).
Model and motive the child/young person, but do not force them.
Ideally works best on arrival at school/setting, prior to the day's learning starting.
How can families support?
Families can use similar, or the same activities used by their child/young person's schools as this promotes continuity.
