What is Respect Young People's Programme (RYPP)?
One minute Guide- RESPECT young people's programme What is it?
The Respect Young People's Programme (RYPP) is a structured intervention for families where children or young people aged 8-18 are abusive or violent towards parents or carers. It aims to reduce harm and rebuild respectful relationships through collaborative, therapeutic support.
How does it work?
RYPP is delivered by trained practitioners over approximately 3 months (10- 12 weeks) through weekly sessions. These include individual work with the young person, sessions with parents/carers, and whole-family work. It uses practical tools and exercises to promote empathy, communication, and conflict resolution.
What are the principles? What are the benefits?
RYPP is trauma-informed and strengths-based, recognising the challenges families face while building on their resilience. It improves family relationships, reduces incidents of abuse, and enhances emotional wellbeing and parenting confidence.
Who and how can this intervention benefit?
RYPP supports families experiencing Child and Adolescent to Parent Violence and Abuse (CAPVA). It benefits young people with behavioural challenges, neurodiverse needs, or emotional difficulties, and empowers parents/carers to respond safely and effectively.
How can this intervention be used? What needs can it support? What CYP may benefit the most?
It can be used in targeted interventions for families in crisis or at risk of breakdown. CYP with unmet emotional needs, trauma histories, or neurodiversity may benefit most. The programme is adaptable to support diverse family contexts.
How can schools/settings support with RYPP?
If a child or young person has a SEND profile, schools can refer families to local RYPP providers like SCT for additional support. Educators can collaborate with practitioners to reinforce respectful behaviour and embed trauma-informed approaches in pastoral care. There is also some limited opportunity's for school/settings staff can also access training to understand CAPVA and support affected pupils.
How can families support with RYPP?
Families play a central role by engaging in sessions, practising strategies at home, and maintaining open communication. The programme encourages shared responsibility and reflection to rebuild trust and safety.
How can you help CYP understand, be ready for and get the most out of their RYPP?
Use age-appropriate language, validate their feelings, and create a safe space for expression. Encourage participation through creative activities and consistent routines that promote emotional regulation and respectful interaction.
