What is Every Relationship Matters in Norfolk (ERMiN)?
ERMiN is Norfolk's local programme for Reducing Parental Conflict (RPC). It offers a range of interventions for parents, universal resources for families, and training for professionals to support healthier relationships and improve outcomes for children.
How does it work?
ERMiN delivers:
- Training for professionals (e.g. One Plus One, ERMiN Intro, Conflict vs Domestic Abuse) NSCP Training Booking Page | Norfolk Safeguarding Children Partnership
- Universal resources co-designed with parents and young people
- Support for children and families through Just One Norfolk and FYI Norfolk platforms
What are the principles?
The ERMiN approach is grounded in several key principles. It is prevention-focused, aiming to intervene early before conflict escalates into more serious issues. It is also child-centred, recognising that the wellbeing of children is directly affected by the quality of parental relationships. The programme is inclusive, supporting all types of families—whether parents are together, separated, or in blended arrangements. Finally, it is evidence-informed, drawing on national research and best practice to ensure interventions are effective and meaningful.
What are the benefits?
Reducing parental conflict through the ERMiN programme brings significant benefits to children, families, professionals, and schools. Children experience improved emotional wellbeing, better behaviour, and stronger engagement in learning when conflict at home is managed constructively. Parents gain tools to communicate more effectively and resolve disagreements in healthier ways, which strengthens co-parenting and family stability. Professionals are equipped with training and resources to support families early, helping to prevent escalation and long-term harm. Schools benefit from improved attendance, concentration, and emotional regulation among pupils, contributing to a more positive learning environment. Overall, ERMiN supports stronger, more resilient families and communities.
How can this intervention be used?
The ERMiN interventions can be used in a variety of ways to support families and professionals. It can be embedded into early help assessments and family support plans, offering structured conversations and practical tools to address conflict before it escalates. Schools and community services can use the programme to guide discussions with parents and carers, helping them reflect on the impact of conflict on their children. Additionally, ERMiN resources can be integrated into RSHE lessons, enabling children and young people to explore healthy relationships, understand family changes, and learn how to seek support when needed.
How can school settings support with Reducing Parental Conflict?
Schools play a vital role in identifying and addressing the impact of parental conflict on children. Staff can support by recognising signs that conflict at home may be affecting a pupil's wellbeing, such as changes in behaviour, concentration, or attendance. Schools can create safe spaces for children to talk about their experiences and feelings, and signpost families to local support such as ERMiN resources or family hubs.
Embedding discussions about healthy relationships and family dynamics into RSHE lessons also helps children understand conflict, separation, and where to seek help. By equipping staff with the confidence and tools to have early conversations, schools can play a key part in preventing the escalation of conflict and supporting children's emotional resilience.
