Spotlight on the Level 5 Specialist Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship
Growing your own experts: specialist TAs who can lead SEND, wellbeing and curriculum enrichment from within.
The Level 5 Specialist Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship, with options to specialise in SEND, social and emotional wellbeing, or specialist curriculum provision (such as early reading, interventions, forest school, music, PE etc...) provides a compelling way to mitigate the ever-growing pressures around capacity and budget in schools.
Carrying £12,000 of funding, and lasting 18-24 months, it enables experienced teaching assistants to upskill in a targeted, work-based way, equipping them to take on more autonomy, lead interventions and curriculum specialisms, and relieve the burden on classroom teachers and external services.
Completing this Level 5 opens doors to further progression (e.g. teacher training, leadership, HLTA roles, specialist roles), especially as this apprenticeship carries the potential for foundation degree status (check with individual providers if this is built in) - helping schools to better plan talent pipelines.

What are the wider organisational benefits of engaging with this apprenticeship?
- Sustainable in-house expertise
Instead of outsourcing, schools can grow specialist roles from within. A TA who already knows the school, the pupils, the ethos, becomes the go-to person for SEND, SEMH or curriculum interventions. - Strategic capacity for SEND & wellbeing
A Level 5 specialist TA can lead targeted programmes, mentor peers, liaise with external agencies, and monitor impact — boosting the quality and consistency of specialist support. - Time back for teachers and senior staff
Teachers and leaders often carry the load of behaviour plans, pastoral support, or literacy/ numeracy catch-ups. Specialist TAs can shoulder many of these responsibilities under direction, freeing up teacher time for planning, instruction and curriculum development. - Sharper curriculum focus and enrichment
In many schools, specialist curriculum areas (e.g. EAL, early reading, music, nurture, forest schools) struggle for capacity. A Level 5 TA specialising in a curriculum strand can provide small-group teaching, embed interventions, adapt resources, and support teaching across the school. - Evidence-based, outcome-focused practice
The apprenticeship is not just theoretical: it requires on-the-job projects, reflective practice, data tracking and impact evaluation. That means schools see measurable returns. - Cost-effective and affordable
The programme is funded through the Apprenticeship Levy mechanism. For levy-paying employers, it can be fully covered; for non-levy schools, co-investment or levy transfers may cover or significantly reduce cost. - Career progression and staff retention
Offering a clear, structured professional development route helps retain committed support staff. TAs see a credible path for growth, which helps morale, loyalty, and recruitment.
