Leading Language Excellence

Strong language skills underpin every child's success—academically, socially, and beyond. Yet ensuring consistently high-quality early language provision across a school requires more than good intention; it demands clarity, strategy, and confident leadership.

Leading Language Excellence is a focused series of four webinars designed specifically for Headteachers and Senior Leadership Teams. Supported by the Wensum English Hub, this programme equips school leaders with the knowledge and tools needed to evaluate current provision and drive sustained improvement in early language development.

Grounded in research and informed by a robust audit framework, each session will support leaders to:

  • Develop a clear understanding of a working model of language, enabling effective observation of children's development across the primary years and beyond.
  • Identify key milestones in typical language development between ages 4 and 11.
  • Strengthen classroom practice through high-impact, evidence-informed teaching strategies that support all learners.
  • Recognise and respond effectively to children who may not be developing language skills as expected.
  • Lead meaningful, sustainable change that embeds high-quality language provision across the whole school.

By the end of the series, leaders will have completed a comprehensive audit of their early language provision, undertaken focused gap tasks, and developed clear, actionable next steps to secure the very best outcomes for all pupils.
