Training

How is this work organised or commissioned

The Educational Psychology and Specialist Support Service (EPSS) provides a range of training and professional learning opportunities to support settings in meeting the SEND, inclusion, learning and wellbeing needs of children and young people.

Our training is informed by psychological theory, evidence-based practice and applied professional experience, and supports the development of inclusive systems, environments and practices that enable children and young people to make positive progress.

What training do we offer?

EPSS delivers training across a range of priority areas, including:

  • Autism and neurodiversity, including engagement with the Neuroinclusive Education Network (NEN)
  • Cognition and Learning (including literacy difficulties, dyslexia, maths difficulties, executive functions)
  • Social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs
  • Behaviour, emotional regulation and wellbeing
  • Attachment-informed, trauma-aware and relational approaches
  • Inclusive practice, reasonable adjustments and graduated responses

Training may be delivered as whole-school or whole-setting sessions, targeted workshops for specific staff groups, or bespoke professional learning, in response to identified need.

How to access training?

General

Information about current and upcoming training is updated regularly, shared via Together e-Courier and summarised in Norfolk Services for Schools (S4S) portal. Schools and settings can access and book EPSS training through the Norfolk Services for Schools (S4S) portal.

Online Training

EPSS have produced a range of online training resources, that can be accessed free of charge. This includes the following

SEND & Inclusion Support Model

Many training activities can be accessed the SEND and Inclusion Support Model. This input is designed to address school-identified priorities, gaps in provision and workforce development needs. Training needs should be discussed through Team Around the School (TAS) processes, where a co-ordinated and flexible training offer can be agreed to support sustainable inclusive practice.

Literacy for All

A graduated approach to supporting literacy development, including early identification and evidence-based interventions. It promotes inclusive, consistent practice across settings. This in-person training session follows viewing the online webinars (Assessment and Theory) LINKs?. This is a practical session on how to plan and deliver: Precision Teaching and Paired Reading

Precision Teaching

A data-driven intervention designed to build fluency and retention of key skills through short, targeted practice. Progress is monitored closely to inform next steps.

Paired Reading

A structured reading intervention where an adult or peer supports a child to develop reading accuracy, confidence and fluency. It promotes positive reading experiences and engagement.

Barriers to Literacy (including dyslexia)

Explores underlying factors that make learning to read and write difficult, reviews barriers to literacy (including dyslexia) and practical strategies to support learners in the classroom.

Cued Spelling

A structured approach to teaching spelling patterns and phonological skills using consistent cues and repetition. It supports learners with literacy difficulties to develop spelling accuracy and confidence.

Supporting Maths Difficulties

Training focused on understanding common barriers to mathematical learning and identifying appropriate support strategies. It promotes inclusive teaching approaches and targeted interventions.

Zones of Regulation

A framework to help children and young people recognise, understand and manage their emotions and levels of alertness. It supports the development of self-regulation skills through shared language and practical strategies.

ELSA (Emotional Literacy Support Assistant)

A school-based intervention delivered by trained staff to support children's emotional wellbeing and social development. It focuses on building emotional literacy, resilience and positive relationships.

Emotion Coaching

An attachment-informed approach that supports children to understand and regulate emotions through empathic adult responses. It helps reduce behavioural escalation and builds emotional resilience.

Circle of Friends

A structured peer support approach that promotes inclusion and positive relationships for children who may feel isolated. It uses group problem-solving to develop social skills and a sense of belonging.

Restorative Approaches

An approach that focuses on repairing relationships and resolving conflict through reflection, accountability and dialogue. It supports positive behaviour, emotional wellbeing and inclusive school cultures.

Lego-based Therapy

A structured, collaborative play-based intervention that supports social communication, problem-solving and teamwork. It is particularly effective for developing peer interaction skills.

Attention Autism Training

A structured teaching approach designed to help autistic children build attention, engagement, and shared focus through highly motivating, visually exciting activities.

TEACCH

A structured teaching approach that supports autistic learners through clear organisation, visual supports and predictable routines. It promotes independence, engagement and understanding.

Talking Mats

A visual communication framework that enables individuals to express views, preferences and feelings. It supports inclusive participation, particularly for those with communication difficulties.

Social Stories

A structured approach to helping children understand social situations, expectations and perspectives. Stories are personalised and support positive behaviour and emotional understanding.

Effective classroom strategies / autism-friendly classrooms and settings

Training focused on adapting environments, routines and teaching approaches to support autistic learners. It promotes inclusive practice that benefits all pupils.

SRB / SHIP Support

EPSS also offer a training opportunities as part of their SRB / SHIP support package, intended to support staff in these setting, and staff from the local, host schools, of children and young people attending these SRB settings.
