Equity Through Oracy: The Oracy Curriculum as a Leveller for Learners

FAO: , 25 April 2025 11:51
Information

Facilitated by by Norfolk Virtual School, this is a practical session focusing on the importance of oracy and strategies to embed across the age ranges with a focus on virtual school cohorts.

Oracy education is nothing new in our schools, yet at a time of technological shift in how we communicate and relate to each other, the case for prioritising oracy within the curriculum couldn't be more persuasive. Spoken language is fundamental in learning how to read, write and access the wider school curriculum, and poor language skills at age 5 are a strong predictor of reduced academic outcomes at age 11. The Education Endowment Foundation reports that oracy interventions give very high impact for very low cost with an impact measure of 6+ months additional progress. Supporting children to articulate ideas, ask thoughtful questions, listen critically and disagree agreeably are not only vitally important skills in learning but in life.

This online training session will be led by Lisa Andrews (Achievement and Inclusion Adviser at Norfolk Virtual School) alongside professionals from Norfolk primary and secondary schools who will share how they have embedded a whole-school oracy strategy this year. It is suitable for staff across all settings and key stage cohorts and will cover:

  • Why oracy education in schools is so vital for learners who are under-served in our communities
  • How to develop whole-school strategies where learners can learn to and through talk
  • How to effectively target and monitor the oracy of under-served groups in school
  • How to work collaboratively with parents and carers to develop oracy

This training is fully funded
