Enhanced SEND Provisions (ESP) Reflections and Next Steps

FAO: Schools and Academies , 15 May 2025 11:07
Information

Over a number of years, several schools across Norfolk have developed Enhanced SEND Provisions—small-group settings designed to provide tailored environments and curricula that enable children to thrive in mainstream education with an enhanced level of support.

These provisions are responsive to the specific needs of each school's cohort and are only implemented where they are deemed appropriate. They are not a one-size-fits-all solution, but rather a flexible approach to meeting the diverse needs of children and young people.

We have developed our support for these provisions over several years.  Throughout the 2024-2025 academic year, we have worked closely with a number schools which has included:

  • On-site visits
  • Networking and peer learning sessions
  • Curriculum and assessment discussions
  • Termly impact reviews

We are grateful to all the schools that have taken part in this work. Thanks to their engagement, we now have a solid evidence base that can support other schools across Norfolk in developing similar provisions where appropriate. It has been inspiring to witness the positive impact on children and families, and the valuable learning this journey has provided for both schools and the Local Authority.

Looking Ahead: Developing Our Support Offer

Building on the insights gained this year, we are developing a new support offer for schools reviewing or developing their enhanced SEND provision. We are currently co-designing this offer with a group of settings, and it will include:

  • Self-serve advice and guidance
  • Networking events
  • CPD opportunities

We welcome the input of Norfolk schools and Trusts as we shape this offer. If you would like to be involved or share your views on what would be most helpful, please contact: suzanne.allen@norfolk.gov.uk
