The Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Bill: Martyn's Law webinar
Safeguarding Webinars for Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSLs)
This 90-minute webinar is for trained DSLs. It does not replace DSL refresher training.
The Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Bill: Martyn's Law
This webinar will be led by Lucy Canning, Safeguarding Adviser and Russ Cole, Norfolk's Preventing Radicalisation Co-Ordinator.
On Monday 19 December 2024, the Government announced details for the Protect Duty, now to be known as 'Martyn's Law' in tribute of Martyn Hett, who was killed alongside 21 others in the Manchester Arena terrorist attack in 2017. The Bill received Royal Assent on 3 April 2025. The legislation builds upon the Protect and Prepare strands of the Government's wider counter terrorism strategy, CONTEST.
The aim of Martyn's Law is to keep people safe, enhance national security and reduce the risk to the public from terrorism by the protection of public venues. It places a requirement on those responsible for certain locations to consider the threat from terrorism and implement appropriate and proportionate mitigation measures.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the webinar DSLs will have an increased understanding of the following:
- What Martyn's Law is
- The implications for education settings
- How to begin to plan for the implementation of the law
There will be an opportunity to ask questions, however if all of these cannot be answered during the 90 minutes, then a member of the Safeguarding Team will get in touch with delegates via email following the webinar.
The webinar will take place via Microsoft Teams; however, you do not need to have this application on your laptop. If you do not, then the webinar will open in an internet browser.
