Training: Managing critical incidents, bereavement and recent trauma in school communities

FAO: Senior Leaders , 29 January 2026 11:50
Information

Outline

This session has been arranged to help senior leaders consider the impact of critical incidents, bereavement and trauma in their school communities. It is free to all Local Authority Schools and those academies and independent schools, which subscribe to the Critical Incident Service. (All other settings are charged £120)

Description

This training will give you an insight into the impact of a possible critical incident which includes a wide range of scenarios. We will provide you with guidance on how to offer appropriate support, considering short term and long term issues as well as managing bereavement and trauma. We will consider the importance of leadership in such an incident. A critical incident may be the unexpected death of a child or an adult closely associated with the school/setting. Equally, it may be an event causing injuries to pupils or staff which results in temporary or long-term disablement including road traffic accidents (school trip, school transport) or other events such as a fire. Support can also be offered in relation to some incidents where the LADO is involved, as well as when you are expecting the death of a child or member of staff due to illness. A member of staff being assaulted by a pupil may be experienced as traumatic, and support can be made available.

Outcomes

  • To feel confident about managing critical incidents, trauma and bereavement in your school
  • To be aware of short term and long term issues in a Critical Incident
  • To gain knowledge about support available for your school community

Please note that we will be covering the management of critical incidents that have an emotional or psychological impact, we will not be talking about those that are of a practical nature only such as business continuity issues.
