EAL Twilight Training Sessions in the Summer Term

We are pleased to provide details of 3 new twilight training sessions to support the teaching of children and young people with EAL. These sessions are suitable for EAL leads, class teachers and anyone working with EAL young people in Primary and Secondary schools. 

The twilight sessions will run from 15.30 to 17.00 and will be delivered on Microsoft Teams. 

EAL Assessment - Distinguishing the Difference between EAL and SEN 

Monday, 18 May, 15.30 - 17.00 

This session will explore using EAL assessment effectively to help EAL leads and SENDCOs to distinguish the difference between EAL and SEND concerns. We will examine tools for language development and discuss expected rates of language development for new arrivals. We will examine effective methods of support through vocabulary support, scaffolding and utilising a pupil's first language. 

Supporting Writing Development for Pupils with EAL  

Wednesday 10th June, 15.30 - 17.00 

This session will explore effective strategies for supporting and developing writing skills in pupils with EAL. We will consider the use of vocabulary support, scaffolding strategies and first language resources to support emerging writing. We will also examine strategies and resources for continuing to support writing development in more advanced EAL learners. 

Building an EAL Inclusive School 

Wednesday, 24 June, 15.30 -17.00 

This session will provide schools with an opportunity to reflect on the strategies and systems they have in place to ensure they are welcoming and inclusive for children and families with English as an Additional Language (EAL), from the point of admission through induction and ongoing support for language development. 
Participants will explore nationally available initiatives and schemes that promote inclusivity and support bilingualism in schools.
