Introduction

The TITAN Primary programme by Norfolk County Council is designed to help Year 6 students transition smoothly into Year 7 by equipping them with essential travel independence skills.

This initiative targets both mainstream and SEND schools, aiming to familiarize students and their parents with the principles of travel independence early on. The programme's early introduction is intended to reduce the need for 1:1 support and increase school participation.

After a successful pilot in 2023, feedback from schools led to several updates for the 2024 launch. The programme also offers supporting information on the Norfolk County Council website, allowing parents to engage with their children's learning at home. The workbook's back page now  includes mini challenges for students to complete over the summer, reinforcing their learning.

Feedback from teachers and students is crucial for the programme's development. Teachers appreciated how the programme facilitated discussions about the transition to high school and addressed mental health concerns. The Primary Booklet was praised for its unique content, covering topics like different types of crossings, safer strangers, the Green Cross Code, and pedestrian skills.  Feedback has also led to some improvements to the programme, including stronger links between the Booklet and the PowerPoint.

In 2024, the TITAN Primary programme reached approximately 91 schools and 2640 students, with 75% of students feeling ready for their transition to secondary school. The programme also identified students who might benefit from 1:1 travel training, potentially reducing the need for specialist transport and positively impacting the Home to School Transport budget. The number of referrals for additional support has significantly increased, highlighting the programme's value.

Next steps for the TITAN Primary programme include releasing it earlier in the year, collaborating with stakeholders to promote it, updating materials based on feedback, creating a specific brand design, and establishing more collaborative partnerships with schools.
