The Department for Education has released updated statutory RSHE guidance, effective from September 2026. This presents a timely opportunity for schools to strengthen RSHE provision and embed it as a strategic driver of whole-school improvement.  Whether you're aligning with statutory duties or building a culture of inclusion and wellbeing, Norfolk's fully funded RSHE support offer is here to help.

Why is it important for schools to prioritise RSHE development?

High-quality RSHE:

  • Enhances safeguarding and pupil wellbeing
  • Promotes equality, inclusion, and emotional literacy
  • Builds resilience and healthy relationships
  • Strengthens whole-school culture and personal development
  • Meets statutory duties with confidence

What will schools need to do before September 2026?

To meet the new guidance and deliver meaningful impact, schools should review and update their RSHE in these eight strategic areas:

  1. RSHE vision

Assign SLT to lead RSHE strategically and embed it into your School Improvement Plan.

  1. RSHE policy

Refresh policies to reflect statutory updates and link RSHE to safeguarding, equality, and online safety.

  1. What the evidence tells us

Use safeguarding data and stakeholder feedback to shape curriculum priorities.

  1. The RSHE curriculum

Map and update your curriculum to include new statutory content and ensure progressive delivery.

  1. Resources and materials

Audit and replace outdated resources with quality-assured materials from trusted providers.

  1. Staff training and CPD

Provide targeted CPD to build staff confidence in planning and delivering sensitive RSHE content.

  1. Family engagement

Share curriculum overviews and create transparent feedback channels to foster trust.

  1. Monitoring, evaluating and evidencing implementation

Hold regular review meetings, gather feedback, and document curriculum changes and impact with pupils, their families, staff and governors.
