For Parents / Carers

Turning 17 often means thinking about learning to drive, a milestone that brings excitement, independence, and sometimes anxiety.

Schools, colleges and youth centres can help build resilience across young people on this journey by sharing resources, webinars, tips and advice so young people, parents and carers are more likely to make safe, informed choices as this driving journey starts.

Norfolk County Council's Road Safety Team would like to share a recording of a webinar designed to support parents and carers, learner drivers, and educators about the learning to drive experience.

Help learner drivers succeed and to be safe

View the recording of "Together on the learning to drive Journey 2025" here,

Please share this recorded webinar with sixth form students and students in college either in lessons (with a reflection section afterwards) or provide it for parents and learner drivers to watch independently.

Learning objectives

  • Supervising learners: Legal duties and best practice.
  • Insurance and vehicle checks: Key safety and compliance tips.
  • Driving skills: DVSA's 27 skills across 8 groups.
  • Private practise: Combine lessons with home practise effectively.
  • Test prep: Mock tests, progress tracking, and "Ready to Pass?" checklist.
  • Myths and resources: Free DVSA tools, managing nerves, avoiding risky choices.

Reflection questions for students

  • What is one new thing you learned about learning to drive?
  • Why do you think private practice is important alongside lessons?
  • What does "being ready to pass" mean to you beyond just passing the test?
  • What will you do to make sure you become a safe and confident driver?
