Speech
The CYP has differences with communicating compared to typically developing peers.
Provision and/or strategies: approaches, adjustments and specific interventions expected to be made by settings according to the ages and stages of the CYP
Universal
- Ensure that staff are aware of speech milestones by age.
- Actively model or teach CYP strategies for what to say and do when they do not understand, and praise CYP when they use these strategies.
- Alternative communication methods are modelled and made accessible by adults, e.g. gestures, signing, communication boards, and visuals.
- Clear speech and pronunciation are modelled by all staff.
- The rate of conversation is considered to reduce pressure on CYP to respond quickly.
- Language and specific words are modelled back accurately, and the CYP's message is responded to regardless of any mistakes with pronunciation, e.g. if a CYP asks, "Where's the dup (cup)?" respond with "The cup is here," rather than directly correcting their speech.
